Double-Tap Toggle
Prefer toggle mode? Double-tap to start, double-tap to stop. Your choice.
Two Ways to Control Recording
VocaMac supports two distinct recording modes. Push-to-Talk holds a key to record continuously and releases to stop. Toggle mode lets you double-tap to start, then double-tap again to stop. Choose whichever fits your workflow.
Toggle mode is perfect for longer dictations or situations where you want hands-free operation. Start your recording with a quick double-tap, then speak freely without holding any keys. Tap again when you’re done. No sustained keyboard pressure required.
How Double-Tap Toggle Works
Configure your hotkey and set VocaMac to Toggle mode. When recording begins:
- Double-tap your hotkey (press and release, press and release within the threshold window)
- VocaMac enters recording mode and begins capturing audio
- A visual indicator shows that recording is active
- Speak your message, question, email, code comment, or anything else
- Double-tap your hotkey again to stop recording and transcribe
The transcription happens instantly. Your text appears at your cursor position. If you double-tap again, VocaMac starts a new recording session.
Configurable Double-Tap Threshold
VocaMac lets you adjust the time window for recognizing a double-tap. Too short, and accidental double-taps become difficult. Too long, and quick sequential uses feel sluggish.
Fine-tune the double-tap threshold in VocaMac settings to match your typing speed and preferences. Most users find 200-400 milliseconds comfortable. Test different thresholds to discover what feels natural for your hands and hotkey choice.
Toggle vs. Push-to-Talk
Push-to-Talk mode is ideal when you want to dictate frequently throughout your day in short bursts. Hold a key, speak a sentence, release, and continue typing. It provides direct tactile control and instant feedback.
Toggle mode shines when you need to:
- Record longer transcriptions without holding a key
- Dictate without visible keyboard interaction (in meetings or public settings)
- Reduce hand strain from sustained key presses
- Maintain both hands on your home row while speaking
Both modes support the same keyboard hotkeys. Switch between modes in settings whenever your workflow demands change.
Real-Time Visual Feedback
While recording in Toggle mode, VocaMac displays a clear visual indicator. The menu bar icon animates, a popover window highlights the recording state, and optional sound cues confirm the start and stop of recording.
This feedback ensures you always know whether VocaMac is listening. No ambiguity. No accidental partial dictations. You have full confidence in every recording session.
Best for Longer Dictations
Toggle mode suits extended speaking sessions. Drafting an email. Recording notes from a meeting. Describing a complex problem in a bug report. Capturing ideas without interruption.
Start recording once, then speak your entire message. No key management. No distracting hotkey sequences. Just your voice and complete focus on what you’re saying.
When finished, a simple double-tap completes the recording. VocaMac transcribes and injects your text. Continue working immediately.
Seamless Mode Switching
Change between Toggle and Push-to-Talk modes in seconds. VocaMac remembers your preference and applies it globally. No restart required. No retraining needed.
Many users employ both modes depending on context. Toggle for focused dictation sessions. Push-to-Talk for quick interjections while typing. VocaMac adapts to however you prefer to work.
